Fortune Ball  Mother-of-Pearl Inlay

What is mother-of-pearl inlay?

Traditional craftwork featuring “Takotsubon” by Ukydaydreamer, decorated by Eriko Terashima of Akari Koubou. A traditional craftwork piece born in Kanazawa, combining “raden” and “Haku-oshi (foil pressing)” techniques.

“Raden” is a traditional lacquerware technique using thinly sliced, lustrous sections of shells like abalone, green turban, or mother of pearl.

“Haku-oshi” is a representative decorative technique used in Wajima-nuri and Kanazawa lacquerware. Precious metals like pure gold or platinum are applied after being rolled into sheets ranging from 1/10,000 mm to 1.2 mm thick. 97% of the domestically produced gold leaf used is made in Kanazawa.
